Glasgow Tenement

Heckmann Design Ltd was approached by a British couple living in Washington DC through BIID, and it was a dream come true for us to work on their new home in Glasgow. Having spent our student and early professional years in Glasgow, we were familiar with tenement architecture, local weather, and the unique spirit of Glaswegians.

The apartment, nestled within a Grade II listed property, required meticulous attention and adherence to Listed Building Consent regulations. We made subtle layout changes, introducing an ensuite and a separate WC while restoring the front rooms to their original proportions, preserving the historical integrity of the space.

As with every project, bespoke joinery played a crucial role in crafting unique interiors that harmonize with the building's context, environment, and the clients' needs and interior design aesthetics. We are proud of the results achieved with this apartment – a bright, fresh, unique, and cozy ambiance.

Returning to Glasgow for a photoshoot was a great experience, reinforcing why we love what we do. Photographer James Balston did a tremendous job capturing the interiors through his lens, emphasizing important features, layers, and the overall mood. Being away from the project for some time and coming back to see how it is used and loved reinforces its meaningfulness to us and our clients, with whom we worked so closely.
